ASA 104 Bareboat Chartering .................................$650 (Prerequisite: ASA 101, ASA 103)

With your ASA Bareboat Certification, you can bareboat charter 35-50 foot sailboats from charter companies around the world!

On the first day of class we spend approximately two hours in the classroom reviewing Points of Sail, Rules of the Road, knots, MOB techniques, USCG requirements and basic navigation, plotting and fuel consumption. We then discuss our itinerary. While one student charts the navigation for the first leg of the trip, the rest of the class stows provisions and makes preparations to get underway. Prior to our departure from the slip, we review additional terminology. Once underway, we will review points of sail and practice tacks, jibes, and the taking of LOPs. While anchored or docked, we will discuss diesel engine operation, air conditioning, galley procedures, head operation and emergency responses to failures. Usually, the first part of the exam is then completed followed by dinner.

After breakfast on the second day of class, one of the students will complete the navigation to the next destination. En route students will train with more advanced sailing techniques such as reefing underway, heaving to, anchoring methods and emergency response reactions. Lunch is eaten in transit. Another student then finalizes the navigation to our overnight destination. Along the way, students will demonstrate two methods of MOB recovery. Upon arrival to our destination, we will review anchoring techniques, weather, tides, going aground and trip planning / plotting. Afterwards we will prepare dinner and test on the final portion of the written exam.

Following breakfast on the last day, one student will plot the morning's navigation, while another charts the afternoon's navigation to return us to Corpus Christi. Once under sail we will polish all of the techniques acquired over the last two days, including docking under variant conditions. Class is dismissed at 5pm.
